Basta con la filosofia del feed yourself (letteralmente, sfamati da solo): dal frigorifero al microonde. Gli americani, cresciuti a fast food e takeaway, riscoprono la convivialità. Tanto più in famiglia: lo dice uno studio del National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse della Columbia University, secondo il quale cenare con i genitori ridurrebbe nei figli il rischio di assumere alcol e droghe. L’indagine, svolta su un campione di mille ragazzi, rivela che il 58 per cento degli intervistati si riunisce con mamma e papà per il pasto serale cinque giorni a settimana. Per chi si limita a tre, la probabilità di consumare bevande alcoliche, tabacco e marijuana sarebbe quattro volte più alta.

E nelle case italiane? Il rito tradizionale, per quanto le dinamiche siano molto cambiate, resiste: a confermarlo è la ricerca La famiglia in tavola. Il ruolo dei pasti nella famiglia italiana, elaborata dall’Istituto Ispo di Milano. Lo screening ha riguardato mille genitori (600 madri e 400 padri): per oltre il 90 per centro, il momento del pasto è quello in cui ci si sente più uniti, nel quale ci si confronta e si prendono le decisioni importanti. Per tre adulti su quattro la rinuncia forzata, causa imprevisti, è un dispiacere. La frequenza è di almeno un pasto al giorno con i figli per il 63 per cento delle madri e il 58 dei padri. La gioia di stare insieme, complice il buon cibo, raggiunge il picco nel fine settimana: la pausa ideale da stress e incombenze quotidiane che l’84 per cento dei papà e il 74 delle mamme dedicano volentieri alla prole. In linea con le vecchie abitudini, a cucinare sono le donne: leader ai fornelli, contro il 6 per cento degli uomini.

If you want to prevent your teenager from abusing alcohol or other drugs, then eat
dinner with him or her on most days of the week. This is just one finding about the power of family dinners from a study published by the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) in September.

This study, “The Importance of Family Dinners II,” was sponsored by TV Land and Nick at Nite’s Family Table. It follows up on CASA’s first family dinner study, released in 2003. Both are part of annual back-to-school surveys conducted by CASA over the past decade.

This research has consistently shown that teenagers who eat dinner more often with their families are less likely to drink, smoke cigarettes, or use other drugs.

The most recent study compared two specific groups: teenagers who have two or less family dinners per week and those who have five or more per week. Those who ate two or less family dinners were:

  • Three times more likely to try marijuana.
  • Two-and-a-half times more likely to smoke cigarettes.
  • One-and-a-half times more likely to drink alcohol.

In addition, the study reveals that families who eat together less often also have lower-quality experiences at the dinner table. Teenagers in this group were more likely to dine with a television on, remain silent during meals, and state that their family dinners were too short.

CASA researchers also correlated more frequent family dinners with:

  • Lower levels of family tension.
  • Teenagers who more often said that their parents are proud of them.
  • Teenagers who more often said that they can confide in their parents about a serious problem.

Households that combine more frequent family dinners with all three of the above characteristics cut their risks for teenage substance abuse in half.

CASA’s research confirms the common-sense notion that shared dinners make for stronger families. Yet many parents are challenged to put this simple idea into practice, notes Becky Sechrist, who directs a parenting program called “Shoulder to Shoulder: Raising Teens Together” for the Minnesota Institute of Public Health.

“The problem, as the study points out, is that there isn’t enough time to go around,” Sechrist says. “Between after-school activity schedules, parent’s work schedules, and a variety of other things, making connections within the family requires a concerted effort these days.” She offers the following suggestions:

Make it a requirement. Set a non-negotiable rule about the number of dinners that your teenager is expected to eat with you each week. “This might feel, for the teen, that it comes at the expense of less time for after-school activities, friends or an after-school job,” says Sechrist. “The payoff in the long run for both parents and teens will be worth it.”

Involve teenagers in all phases of the meal. Whenever possible, involve teenagers in planning and preparing their favorite meals. Your children will more often come to the dinner table as willing participants if you do this.

Make meals enjoyable. While it isn’t always possible to avoid discussions on controversial topics–for example, homework and peer groups–effort should be made to talk about things that interest all members of the family and won’t cause conflict.

I figli crescono e, prima o poi, a tavola i genitori si trovano di fronte non più i loro bambini, ma degli adolescenti. E così è possibile che chi fino a quel momento ha mangiato senza creare problemi cominci a mettere su il muso. Oppure che non rispetti più le regole e preferisca mangiare prima dell’ora del pasto una confezione famiglia di yogurt anziché rendere onore ai piatti preparati dai genitori.

La tavola da pranzo non dovrebbe tuttavia trasformarsi in uno scenario di lotte di potere né servire ai ragazzi per differenziarsi dai genitori. In simili casi ai genitori possono risultare utili i risultati di uno studio condotto sul campo che ha dimostrato che prima o poi gli adolescenti tornano a mangiare bene come da bambini, al più tardi comunque quando formano una propria famiglia. I genitori possono dunque tranquillamente chiudere entrambi gli occhi se il rampollo privilegia alimenti meno salutari di prima.

Alcuni suggerimenti

  • Continuare a dare il buon esempio. Non bisogna lasciarsi scoraggiare e continuare a dare importanza ai pasti comuni, consumati insieme.
  • Non brontolare. I suggerimenti dati ai figli in merito alle loro abitudini alimentari non servono a niente. Meglio evitarle. In ogni caso ogni cosa che si dice viene sempre accolta male.
  • Parlare la stessa lingua. Spiegare che mangiando bene si mantiene il corpo sano e attivo anche in età avanzata non serve a nulla con i ragazzi. Meglio puntare su altri argomenti, per esempio sul fatto che un’alimentazione sana serve a mantenere la pelle bella e pura o i muscoli, i capelli e le unghie sani.
  • Accettare altri modi di mangiare. I giovani hanno sempre fame e tendono a svuotare il frigo. Questo è un fatto che va accettato. Per evitare di rimanere senza ingredienti per un pranzo in famiglia o per una cena tra amici è importante mettere al sicuro gli alimenti chiave oppure denominarli in modo chiaro che non vengano presi.
  • Cucinare insieme. Una buona idea è quella di far cucinare gli adolescenti almeno una volta alla settimana oppure di coinvolgerli nella preparazione di qualche piatto. In questo modo si fa leva sul loro senso di responsabilità e di indipendenza.

Over the last 20 years, dozens of studies have confirmed what parents have known intuitively for a long time: Sitting down for a nightly dinner is good for the spirit, the brain and the body. Research shows that shared meals are tied to many teenage behaviors that parents pray for: reduced rates of substance abuse, eating disorders and depression; and higher grade point averages and self-esteem. For young children, conversation at the table is a bigger vocabulary booster than reading aloud to them. The icing on the cake is that kids who eat regular family dinners grow up to be young adults who eat healthier and have lower rates of obesity.

  • It doesn’t have to be daily.

You don’t have to have dinner every night to reap the benefits. It could be breakfast, a weekend brunch, a take-a-break-snack at night or a combination of these. And there’s no magic number. The point is to make a commitment to a family meal where everyone sits down to share food, have fun and talk about things that matter.

  • Play with your food.

With so much of our play now conducted online, adults and children have lost the opportunity to play with real objects that can be touched, smelled and transformed. So play together. Cooking is an activity that still involves our senses and our hands, and it is something we still can do together. You can set out salad fixings and have everyone choose vegetables to create faces, trees and cars. Play with taste by slipping in a new flavor or spice and asking everyone to guess the ingredients.

  • It’s doable.

Despite parent’s hectic work schedules and kids’ busy extracurricular activities, it’s very doable to have nightly dinner. The whole process of cooking and eating together can take just an hour (less than 30 minutes to cook and the average meal is 22 minutes*), and that hour is transformative. If we still planted vegetables, played instruments for our entertainment and quilted on the front porch, we might not need family dinners, but it’s the most reliable time of day that we have to connect with one another. When kids feel connected to their parents, it’s like a seatbelt on the potholed road of childhood.

  • Try new activities and share talents.

Dinner can be a great place to try out new behaviors. A family dinner is like an improvisatory theater performance. The family shows up night after night, and as a group they can try out new ways of interacting with one another. Or, one member’s behavior can set off a cascade of others. For example, a family might agree to refrain from making any negative comments at the table and see what happens. Or, a teenager might be invited to make a family dinner or to create a musical soundtrack for the meal.

  • Share your family history.

The dinner table is the best place to tell stories, and kids who know their family stories are more resilient and feel better about themselves. Most inspiring are lemonade-from-lemon stories, stories about adversity where a lesson is learned, or negative events that transform into something good. Stories help us make sense of the world, and they help kids connect to something bigger than themselves. Tell stories about yourself and other family members when they were the same age as your children. Tell stories about romance, first jobs, immigration, how names were chosen, a childhood pet, a favorite recipe or kitchen disaster.

  • Stay connected.

Table conversation is one of the richest language experiences you can provide for your children. When else do we sit and talk for several minutes, offering lots of comments and explanations on one topic? Try asking questions that go beyond, “How was your day?” For example, instead ask everyone to tell a rose (something positive) and a thorn (something negative) about the day, as well as a bud (what you wish will happen tomorrow).

  • It’s good for you, too.

Rituals like dinner, which punctuate a world that often feels frenzied and out of control, are good for adults, too. Knowing that one part of your day is going to unfold in basically the same way, day after day, is comforting.

Le buone abitudini pagano: uno studio olandese dimostra che gli adolescenti abituati a mangiare a tavola con la famiglia hanno meno probabilità di incappare in problemi alimentari e, soprattutto, emotivi.

Quindi, genitori non cedete! Riunire a tavola tutta la famiglia può essere una fatica, ma rinunciarvi ha conseguenze sul benessere psico-fisico dei ragazzi. Non importa che il rapporto sia idilliaco e il dialogo sereno, mangiare insieme ha ricadute sull’equilibrio e la fiducia in sé degli adolescenti.

A confermarlo una ricerca canadese condotta su 26 mila ragazzi tra gli 11 e i 15 anni, pubblicata sul Journal of Adolescent Health. Oltre a garantire buone abitudini alimentari e a prevenire l’obesità, mangiare regolarmente insieme avrebbe – secondo lo studio – effetti positivi sulla salute mentale. “I giovani hanno meno problemi emotivi e comportamentali e atteggiamenti più positivi verso gli altri”, ha commentato Frank Elgar, autore dello studio e docente presso il McGill Institute per la salute e le politiche sociali di Montreal. Alberto Pellai, ricercatore dell’Università di Milano e autore di “Questa casa non è un albergo” (Kowalski editore), si occupa di prevenzione del disagio negli adolescenti. “Più di una ricerca ha dimostrato che maggiore è il tempo che la famiglia passa insieme in una settimana intorno alla tavola e migliore è la capacità di autoprotezione dei figli quando si muovono nella loro vita e all’interno del gruppo di amici. Cenare spesso insieme, a patto che tv e tablet siano spenti, riduce le probabilità di comportamenti a rischio come alcol, fumo o droghe”. E continua: “non importa se a tavola i ragazzi non parlano, ma hanno bisogno di ascoltare gli adulti che parlano di loro e con loro. Questo gli fornisce una visione del mondo alternativa a quella proposta dai coetanei. E quando escono di casa, si portano dentro di sé il genitore che lasciano seduto sul divano, con i suoi insegnamenti”.

You’ve probably heard that having dinner together as a family is a good thing for your kids, but you may not realize that it could change your child’s life. Dinner is the best predictor we have of how kids will do in adolescence. The more frequently kids eat dinner with their families, the better they do in school, and the less likely they are to get involved with drugs or alcohol, suffer depression, consider suicide, or become sexually active during high school.

Why? Maybe because families who eat together talk more, which helps them stay connected and build better relationships.

Maybe because parents who show up to eat with their kids are more likely to express their love constructively in other ways, too, in the form of both attention and supervision.

Maybe because families who offer kids more structure are more likely to keep kids attending to their homework as well as out of trouble.

Maybe because dinner transforms individual family members into a “group,” which gives parents more clout to rival the power of the peer group.

Or maybe because children, even more than the rest of us, need something to count on every day, the tangible security of belonging and being nurtured that is represented by the ritual of sharing food with those we love.

Whatever the reason, dinner is a pretty easy insurance policy to build into your home life. If you’re too busy to have dinner as a family on a regular basis, it’s worth re-examining why, given how important it is.
